OpenAI Unveils Its First Custom AI Chip, Jalapeno

OpenAI has unveiled Jalapeno, its first custom-designed AI chip, developed in collaboration with Broadcom. Built specifically for AI inference, the chip is designed to power applications like ChatGPT more efficiently while reducing OpenAI’s reliance on third-party AI processors. Manufacturing will be handled by TSMC, with deployment expected later this year.  

Jalapeño marks the first step in OpenAI’s long-term strategy to build its own AI computing infrastructure. Optimized for large language models, the chip is intended to deliver faster inference and improved energy efficiency while giving OpenAI greater control over the hardware that powers its AI services.
